This page is an original collector checklist for evaluating Colt U.S. military M1911 and M1911A1 pistols.
It is intended as a research aid only. Always verify a pistol using multiple references, photographs, and expert review.
| Feature | What To Check |
| Serial Range | Confirm the serial number falls in the expected Colt production block. Do not authenticate by serial number alone. |
| Slide | Compare slide markings, address lines, logo placement, patent information, and font style to the production period. |
| Frame | Check United States Property marking, model marking, serial number style, proof marks, and inspection initials. |
| Inspector Mark | Inspector initials must match the production period. Colt examples may involve JMG, RCD, WGP, RS, WB, or GHD depending on year. |
| Finish | Evaluate whether the finish appears period-correct, arsenal-applied, commercially refinished, or heavily worn. |
| Barrel | Photograph barrel markings and compare them to the production period. Barrel replacement is common on service pistols. |
| Small Parts | Review hammer, safety, slide stop, trigger, mainspring housing, grips, pins, and magazine. |
| Rebuild Marks | Look for AA, SA, RIA, OG, ANAD, LEAD, or other depot/rebuild markings. |
